CHAPTER FIFTEEN

In the driveway where Kan kidnapped the woman earlier in the day, another car approached in the gloom of the approaching evening. The man driving the car frowned as he saw his ex-wife’s car sitting in the driveway.

It was unusual for two reasons. One the car never sat in the driveway. It always went in the garage.

And second, his ex-wife’s keys were lying on the ground next to the car.

Jürgen Mehlis had a feeling something was badly wrong. He was tempted to phone the police right away and stay in the car until they arrived. But then he realised how stupid he would look if they arrived and discovered his wife had merely dropped her keys and was safely inside the house.

He turned and spoke to his young son who was sitting in the back seat waiting to get out.

“Wait in the car. Don’t get out till I tell you.”

His son sat without answering, immersed in the game he was playing on his phone.

Silently cursing his ex-wife, he got out of the car.

“If you’re inside sipping white wine and getting hammered, I’m going to be really angry with you” he said to himself.

He rang the front door bell and was met with a resounding silence. He peered through the windows and realised all the lights were out.

She was not home. But she knew that he was bringing their son back from his monthly weekend custody. So she wouldn’t go out again. And why were her keys on the ground?

Realising he needed to do something, he reluctantly took out his mobile phone and called the police.
